Rotoscoping

Stories can be told in an unlimited number of ways.

Rotoscoping is a technique/ method for animators to make use of a short amount of time. They take a video or an existing moving reference and project it onto a pad of paper, tracing roughly over the shapes. This can inform the structure of movement, while letting you keep the flow of hand drawn artwork. I have a time constraint on my project it will take me alot of time to complete frame by frame animation for my project. I am dedicated to the style I wish to use, and will put in the hours to complete it, however any shortcut of efficiency is welcome.

Animation & Rotoscoping Projects — Brittany McBride

This is an example of rotoscoping; a Spotify advertisement created by Brittany McBride. The movement is smooth and realistic.

I have applied this technique in some short animations below, eyeballing a video of somebody walking and sketching the placement of all their limbs – to make sure I got the bobbing motion correct.
