Feedback : Compilation of useful feedback and my personal responses.

  • Focus more on nurturing the smaller habits into being a positive move. Its a good way to make people actually create habits and action. and it makes people feel better about themselves that they’re helping the planet without having to do big things.

This was a very useful comment, as it was along the same train of thought I had, but had not yet implemented. Having grown up in a household where we tried our best to make small changes and believed they were doing something for the environment, I can understand the opposite perspective as well. In my narrative story I plan to make small actions seem appealing to a larger audience. When changes are made in your life, it can sometimes feel useless on a wider scale. During the plotline there is a moment when the protagonist is in a negative situation and is trying to change a situation on her own, and not succeeding. She feels very alone and insignificant. But then a big group of small people start working on the same problem, and make a significant change. I will address this exact issue in a ending transcript, once the story is complete.

  • As a method of sharing the outcome, perhaps create posters or booklets with QR code/tear- off section?
For the website link, keep a simple URL so viewers can remember on the spot and search when they arrive home.

One of my main problems has been how to actually spread this narrative story around. Sharing the link on social media is a failsafe, however I was really wanting to create some printed matter for advertisement – the tear away paper URL was an idea I really liked. I am not at the printing stage just yet, however I will try some tests for this design – think of a way to include the rolling story design into the advertisement.

  • Prompt: Do I make the story narrative or fact based?
Feedback: Fiction based story is easier for people to relate to personally, and are more likely to finish the course of the story.

I like to learn through fictional narrative, so I was happy to hear this as a unanimous answer in my focus group. When I first started to ideate and create storyboards for this project I was trying hard to insert facts about the climate situation, and it just felt so forced. None of it fit correctly into the form I had chosen. To design a fictional narrative will be, and has been so far, a much more personal experience for me, and I can integrate sustainable action in both a conscious and subconscious way. A story with a plotline will be easier to follow as a reader as well, hopefully more memorable in the long run.

  • You could try adding sound to the website, so that it enhances the mood and ambience

I do like this idea very much, and I would like to try it if I have the time to design audio. I would use bird calls and wind in the garden, maybe distant wind-chimes.

  • Making sure the information is not too overwhelming for the audience.

This is good feedback regarding our age bracket of university students. We are busy people, with very stressful and overwhelming days already, The last thing we want to do is add stress to these students by overwhelming them with negative information. It will scare people off. Instead I want to try raising an awareness in a soft and gentle manner. One piece of feedback from our focus group we received was regarding the person avoiding documentaries so that they didn’t feel guilty about their lack of action. I would like to implement a story that doesn’t invoke that reaction from the viewer. I want them to feel comfortable with what they take away.

I have really enjoyed reading peoples’ reactions to how playful and experimental our group outcomes are, through stories, videography and games. I am really passionate about the creation of my rolling narrative because of these reactions. People tend to not think about this type of storytelling until it is placed in front of them, then they get excited to use it. We are in a mobile led age and designing for technology is important. But its easy to become too formal when designing for a digital space. I am working towards designing a playful digital space to host my outcome.
