~ Make a solid deadline, at least 2 days early. We can refine it and practice the verbal presentation. Aim for 10 pages in the slideshow. Maria proposes writing a script.
Project Abstract – Have a discussion closer the the end of break where we have a discussion and write down our abstract thoughts academically.
Class Critique session –
Societal outcome?
What do we want to teach the kids? Focused not vague.
What is each group member targeting. What is easiest thing to teach through the assets we have chosen?
Looking through the Auckland 2050 Plan, environmental section. What can we make use of and implement? The direction we have been going is on focus 1. Restoring environments, stewards of the natural environment and make sustainable choices.
We either target green or blue areas. how can reconcile working with both? Looking at blue spaces would be interesting as we have never done it before. blue spaces, water is a core part of Aucklanders’ lives. we have oceans, rivers, drought, drinking water. Waiheke declared that we cant fish off of the island, so that the populations of Paua and shellfish come back. If one of our projects looked at water, focusing on blue spaces, that could be a way to merge the 2 together. -Maria and Hannah card game? Fresh water areas are quite important as well, rivers and eels are dying off.
In India Hannah learned that the water in the rivers came from Mount Everest, feeding down into the streams. the only time they have been conscious of water is the safety of animals or not drinking it.
Finding a problem that kids directly contribute to.
Finding ways to strengthen their good life choices in general.
Some positive actions for the environment go against parents’ safety precautions. “mum yelled at me for picking up trash” but the trash is dirty.
when youre in school with kids, there’s cliques. whatever the cool kids want to wear and do dictates how other kids work. You care more about how your peers see you.
Hannah: In the 90s people were caring and doing environment days. after the 2000s the world cared more about technology became more and more in your lives. cellphones came out, computers in their homes. downloading illegal stuff. Pop-culture of the 00s was spending money and clothes, consumerism boomed. At high school, 2006-8 thrifting became really cool, everyone began op-shopping. No tailored media to consume.
While wanting to grow up you and become adults early but reject the messages they are given.
Older Siblings – imparting a message on their younger siblings or family members.
If you look at climate strikes, kids are pushed along in these schools and classes holding huge signs but don’t understand what they are protesting, aren’t being taught properly the implications of their actions. If a protest is solely for a government movement but the people involved aren’t implementing the actions, we aren’t targeting the people but the overseers.
if we give them a set of activities that they themselves can do and create they will feel satisfaction. If we simultaneously teach them why they are doing it, a number of those kids will keep those lessons for life.
How are kids travelling?? – what ways could kids subconsciously reduce their climate footprints
ENVIRONMENTAL LEGO or foundation blocks- has seeds inside. no sore feet!!

Protecting the fragile balance of nature ‘Kaitiakitanga*’
Teaching kids how to be the stewards of the land, the sky and the water
*(Kaitiakitanga means guardianship and protection. It is a way of managing the environment, based on the Māori world view. A kaitiaki is a guardian. This can be a person or group that cares for an area such as a lake or forest.)
